Cleaning with vodka

If you are a fan of the eco-friendly style of living, you have probably read tons of information about healthy eating and household products that do not contain harmful substances. Still, if you have not paid enough attention to this kind of lifestyle, you’d better keep reading and get acquainted with the unusual uses of alcoholic beverages and vodka in particular. Vodka has long been used for relieving toothache and as a replacement of mouthwash products because of its antibacterial properties. Plus it makes freshly cut flowers last longer and it has a terrific beauty purpose. Rinsing your hair with vodka eliminates dandruff and scalp irritations. You can also use it as a hand-sanitiser. If you hurt yourself while you perform a home improvement project and you don’t have an first-aid kit around, pour vodka on the wound until you find medications. If you are wondering how you can use vodka for completing your house chores, here are a few great ideas:

  • When it comes to cleaning properties, vodka is the indisputable leader among alcoholic beverages. Apart from being a common ingredient in cocktails, there is no surface you are unable to clean with a microfiber rag, dampened with vodka. Here are some of the most widespread applications of the beverage that will make your domestic cleaning much easier, not to mention you will not have to use the notorious toxic cleaning detergents. The results are promised to be near as immaculate as professional house cleaners just left your home!

  • If you want to eliminate unpleasant smell from your clothes, vodka is your irreplaceable assistant. Pour it directly onto the piece of clothing or add a cup of vodka right before the washing cycle. Then, leave the clothes dry naturally. Vodka eliminates bacteria that cause unpleasant smell, but once the clothes get dry, the vodka itself does not smell.

  • If you are about to take up a massive cleaning project such as a thorough deep cleaning of the entire house or an end of tenancy cleaning, you should pay attention to every nook and cranny and treat every dirty spot. Items that have ornaments, such as chandeliers are the most tedious to clean. All you need to do is to dampen a clean rag with some vodka and treat the surface. The latter method is suitable when you want to restore the shine of chrome, glass or porcelain surfaces.

  • Once it has emerged, mould is difficult to handle. Apart from installing a proper ventilation system and keeping the humidity within the reasonable levels, you can treat the areas, affected by mould with vodka. Get a top-shelf vodka from the liquor store and pour it into a spray bottle. Apply to the affected areas and wait for 15 minutes. Then scrub with a soft brush and rinse.

  • Sticky residue can also be removed with vodka. This includes a chewing gum stuck on the floor, a gunk left from a label, etc. Spray some of the beverage onto the area you want to clean and wipe down with a soft rag.

  • You have friends coming over in half an hour and you are out of a glass cleaner but the balcony door is covered in fingerprints? The mirrors also need a touch-up? You don’t have a reason to worry as long as you have some vodka at home. Use it as a standard glass cleaner and enjoy the incredible shine of the windows and mirrors. Don’t use the entire quantity you have in stock though. You can share a drink with your friends. Unless they are cleaning freaks, they might say it’s a pity to waste the beverage for cleaning purposes instead of sharing a drink with them. The good new is that even if you pick the cheapest vodka on the market, it will still have incredible sanitising properties – save the good one for leisure nights!

  • As mentioned above, vodka has excellent odour neutralising features, which is a great thing to know especially when summer is around the corner. If you want to remove unpleasant sweat smell from your mattress, spray some vodka onto it and let it get dry. The odour will be gone for good.

  • In point of fact, vodka has been used in aromatherapy for ages. You can make your own air freshener and the best of all is that you don’t have to invest in an expensive brand. The bottom-shelf vodka also does a great job. So, pour it into a suitable container and add a few drops of your favourite essential oil. Don’t forget to add some water, too. Shake well and place some paper straws or reeds. The more essential oils you use, the longer the scent will linger.

These were some of the most widespread cleaning properties of vodka. Even if it is not your favourite alcoholic beverage, you should definitely give a try to the aforementioned cleaning tips. A bottle of vodka is a way cheaper than the cleaning detergents you buy. Plus it is distilled and purified and therefore harmless to you and the environment!
